A new partnership means residents can donate items to Telford Crisis Support at Halesfield Household Recycling Centre (HRC), for reuse in home packs for people in need.
The HRC, run by leading waste resource management company Veolia as part of the Waste Management Services contract for Telford & Wrekin Council, has a dedicated area for items that can be reused by others through the work of the charity. Donations can come in all shapes and sizes and those dropped off already have included pans, crockery, cutlery and curtains.
Telford Crisis Support (TCS) is an independent, volunteer-led charity providing a wide range of related support services for individuals and families across the borough of Telford and Wrekin. Alongside their core foodbank service, TCS runs a baby and toddler bank and a school uniform pre-loved scheme, as well as offering help with home energy, re-homing, and support for bed poverty community projects.
Thanks to the new initiative with Veolia and Telford & Wrekin Council, TCS can support people needing key home items. Residents bringing waste and recycling to the site are encouraged to speak to staff if it is something that could be reused by the charity.
Simon Lellow, Operations Manager for Telford Crisis Support said:
“We're really pleased to be working with Veolia and Telford & Wrekin Council to intercept items from waste to instead be reused by our clients. Having access to crockery, cookware and homeware is a massive help to people who otherwise wouldn't be able to get them, it helps people start on the front foot, with the best chance of moving out of crisis. As an organisation we are keen to make a difference not only to the people we help but to our local environment too, and working together with partners is an effective way of meeting this aim.”
Steve Mitchell, Regional Director for Veolia said:
“We’re very pleased to be working with Telford Crisis Support through our Household Recycling Centre in Halesfield. It’s fantastic to be able to divert good items from the waste stream, to instead be reused by people in need in our community. The social value and human benefit is clear, but there are environmental benefits too, preserving natural resources and saving energy, through less need to make new items. Veolia is committed to ecological transformation through sustainable projects such as this.”
Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for neighbourhood, commercial services and regeneration, said:
“There are so many people across Telford and Wrekin who are keen to help others in need, which is really wonderful. This scheme is a great way for them to support some of the most vulnerable members of our community. By donating unwanted household items and giving them a new lease of life, you are not only helping others, you are also making Telford and Wrekin a more sustainable borough.”
